Stars of David Some historians believe that the Magen David (literally "Shield of David") was the symbol painted on the shield that King David wore when the Israelites went to war. The Star of David is commonly associated with Judaism. Although theologians and philosophers have attempted to attribute deep meanings to the symbol, the star has no religious significance and is not found in the Bible. The hexagram has been a popular emblem in many cultures, and, in its Jewish incarnation, was used by mystics as an amulet against demons. It evolved into a merely ornamental design and was chosen by Theodore Herzl to represent the Zionist movement precisely because of its lack of religious connotations. During World War II, the Nazis required Jews to wear yellow Stars of David as identifying badges. Today, the Star of David appears most prominently on the flag of the State of Israel, and it is a popular and universally recognized symbol of Judaism and the Jews. The Star of David is built into the logos of many Jewish businesses and organizations. Like other Jewish Stickers, our Stars make wonderful envelope seals and can also be used to decorate name tags, invitations to parties, correspondence cards, informals, and other stationery. They make effective package seals, and can be used to attach a gift card to a gift. One of our more popular Stars in a standard size was made into a large sticker and used as a seal on corporate gifts distributed at a convention. |
