Passover

Passover, Pesach, is one of the three great pilgrimage festivals (the other two are Sukkot and Shavuot). Pesach is arguably the most important holiday in the Jewish calendar, after the High Holy Days. The story of Passover is the story of Moses and the freeing of the Israelite slaves from Egypt, one of the most moving and powerful narratives in all human history.

Jews are required to do three things on Pesach:
(1) tell the story of the Exodus,
(2) eat matzah, and
(3) refrain from eating chametz, or leavened bread.

It is during the Seder, the festive meal and celebration that occurs in Jewish homes around the world, that the famous “four questions” are asked, beginning, “Why is this night different from all other nights?”

“In every generation, each of us should feel as though we ourselves had gone forth from Egypt, as it is written, ‘and you shall explain to your child on that day, it is because of what the Lord did for me, when I went forth from Egypt.’” (Exodus 13:8)
