Mother’s Day

Many countries in the Western world have a secular holiday to celebrate motherhood. In the US, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. This gives us a special opportunity to obey the fifth commandment: “Honor thy father and thy mother.”

Here is a set of gift coupons made by a young man for his mother, with stickers from set 02050:

Below are a Mother's Day card and envelope made with stickers from set 02049.

The envelope reads, “kamu vaneha v'ya-shruha,” and the card is inscribed, “her children arise and call her blessed.”

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a traditional American holiday. Often regarded today as a secular holiday, Thanksgiving is celebrated by Americans of all faiths. It is not a coincidence that Thanksgiving bears a resemblance to Sukkot ~ before coming to what would become the United States, the pilgrims lived for a time in the Netherlands among Sephardic Jews.

Halloween

Halloween is a controversial holiday among Jews. Some refuse to participate in any way, on the basis that the holiday began as a pagan celebration and evolved into the Christian holiday All Hallows Eve, and that it has associated with it many elements that are contrary to Jewish values. Examples are the tricks played on people and the demands made for sweets.

Other Jews believe that the holiday as celebrated in 21st- century America has no religious significance and that it is possible to celebrate in such a way that Jewish values are reinforced. For example, some children dress up to give treats, rather than go trick-or-treating, while others collect money for tzedakah instead of collecting candy.

It is with great sadness that we announce that
