Shabbat The Shabbat (Sabbath) candles are lit just before sundown on Friday evening. As the woman of the house lights the candles, she welcomes the Sabbath Queen. The Sabbath table is set with wine, candles, and a challah for the motzi, the blessing over the bread. The challah is kept covered until after the kiddush, the blessing over the wine. For the Saturday morning service in which the weekly portion of the Torah is read, men, and in some congregations, women, wear a tallit, or prayer shawl. A tallit is worn only at morning services, with one exception: Kol Nidre, which takes place before sundown on the evening before Yom Kippur. The Torah is a handwritten copy on parchment in Hebrew of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. The open Torah scroll is read with the help of a yad, or pointer. It is a high honor to carry the Torah scroll around the synagogue before and after the Torah reading. The Torah is routinely read during services on Saturday mornings and afternoons, and on Monday and Thursday mornings. |
